Roller Race #1 Recap

This past Saturday was the first of three in the MVA’s first ever Roller Racing series.  Fun was had by all – read on in our story to check out how our competitors did and to learn more about the second race night.

Great Roller Racing Action!

Hosted by locally-owned restaurant “Shawn O’Donnell’s” in south Everett, the first event featured a fully-catered pasta dinner and delicious beverages.  And the food certainly didn’t disappoint!  But the main course?  The roller racing…

For each race night, riders are awarded points based on their fastest time of the evening.  These fast times are then compared to the fastest times raced by others in their category to award series points.  Each category had some good stories to tell, even on the very first night of racing!

Highlights

The Master Women featured a whole host of first-timers laying everything out for the sake of good competition and sport.  The eventual victor, Katie Stark, had to ride a couple times before bringing her time down under 29 seconds to top the first night’s competition.

The race for the Master Men victory was a gripping story of back-and-forth rivalry as rich as any in throughout the night.  Ken Dong started off strong by setting an early fast-time and comfortably leading for most of the evening.  It wasn’t until Mike Freimann’s third ride that the challenger was able to take the lead.  Even the heated final grudge match wasn’t enough for Ken to take back the coveted lead!  Four races later, Mike took home the first win.

The Elite Women ended in a dazzling show of competition – Track champs Amara Edwards and Annette Williams ended in A TIE! (Pictured above to the left)  That’s right, down to the thousandth of a second, the two racers were perfectly matched… literally!  The computer “gave” the win to Amara, but later sorted Annette’s time as faster in the results.  In the end, we had to think they had both earned 5 series points and a victory that night.  What a show!

The Elite Men were another story completely.  Defending roller racing champ Tony Cordova was quick to establish a lead, but it wasn’t long before Andrew Carlberg came charging in and set the fastest time on the night.  After two more attempts, Tony found he simply couldn’t dethrone the Texan.  The night instead ended in a novelty finals match between the two, where both competitors couldn’t use their hands!  What resulted was the hilarious standing/running/sprinting pose seen above on the right.

And let’s not forget the guest appearance by restaurant owner and friend to cyclists Shawn O’Donnell.  You can see him trying out the roller racing setup at the top of the story.  Not only did he give it a spin, he treated the crowd to a rare and truly mystifying magic show.  Thanks Shawn for the great evening!

Here’s the results in PDF format, for those that want to see.
