Welcome new racers!

Congratulations on deciding to take a track class, enjoying the track class, and deciding that you wanted to race. We understand people like you, and we want to do everything that we can to ensure that you have a successful, stress free, and exciting introduction into track racing.

First of all, welcome. We recommend getting to the velodrome with plenty of time to spare. Our suggestion is to plan on a 5:40 arrival for the 7:00 race start on a Thursday night. This will give you ample time to rent a bike, complete the registration process, get your number pinned, and take a few laps on the track to get the body loose before racing starts at 7:00. It’s better for everyone if you show up early!

If you have a track bike, that’s great. Just remember that you must remove any brakes that may be on, it must have drop handlebars, horizontal rear dropouts and it must be in the correct gear (86inch, 22’3″ rollout, 48×15). If you are renting a bike, remember the size that you rode at your class and meet us at the garage and we’ll get you set up. Rental bikes are first come, first serve. We’ll start renting bikes around 5:40. If you ride a 52cm, 54cm or 56cm, come early! Those are our three most popular sizes.

Once you have your bike, you need to get yourself registered for racing. If you do not have a USA Cycling racing license, you will need one of those to compete. You can get a one-day license for fifteen dollars a race night, or you can purchase a yearlong license on http://www.usacycling.org for $60.00.

There will be a table set up outside of the registration window. Here you’ll need to fill out two different forms. One is the waiver, and another, the colored form, is our way of knowing who you are. You need to fill out the waiver form EVERY time you come to race. We’ll save the colored form: next time you race it will be in a folder sorted by last name.

Now you bring your two waivers to the registration booth and you are almost done! Now is the time to get settled on all the fees. For taking the class, you get two free race nights. What that means is that your race entry is covered. You’ll still need to pay for the rental bike (if you need one!), licensing fee, and once you upgrade the MVA membership fee ($75).

Make sure and bring cash or a check, and one dollar for parking!

Fees:

Rental bike: $10 (women/juniors u18: free)

Racing: Free for two nights, then $20

-A year long MVA membership is not required for Thursday night racing, but will be required upon upgrading.  Cost is $75.

USAC License:  One day- $15, Yearlong- Available at http://www.usacycling.org

Once you’re registered, you’ll get a number and you are almost ready to race. Please remember that you will use the same number until you upgrade to Wednesday nights, so please remember to bring it back when you come race again!

We’re glad you decided to come out and give racing a try! We know that you’ll have a blast. See you out there!
