Now here’s a good idea – let’s get all of the MVA community together to eat some food, drink some beer, and compete on stage for glory (and prizes). And all this in the spirit of kicking off 2014 in style! Fortunately for all of us, the MVA has put together just such a plan. Read on for all the details for the MVA’s very first Roller Racing Series.
This series will be held over three dates at different locations around our area. Let’s see what we have in store for everyone…
- February 1st, 6-9 PM @ Shawn O’Donnell’s, 122 128th St SE, Everett. $20 cover, and dinner is included! All ages welcome.
- March 1st, 4-7 PM @ Element Cycles, 8215 160th Ave NE, Redmond. Our second race night is free. Yes, free.
- March 29th, 6-9 PM @ Tech City Bowl, 13033 NE 70th Pl, Kirkland. $20 cover, and bowling is included! Double Points for the final night.
Those familiar at all with past roller racing events hosted by the MVA will be well acquainted with the coveted “belt”. The highly unique and saught-after trophy, along with roller race champion braggin rights, will be won by the racer with the highest total points over the course of the three evenings in each of 6 categories – Junior Men/Women, Elite Men/Women, Masters Men/Women. Top point finishers will also get some great extra prizes for their efforts.
Can’t be the fastest on the bike? No worries, we got you covered. We plan to give away plenty of prizes spontaneously throughout the event for categories such as Best One-Legged Race, Best “Civilian” Time, and other clever twists. And besides, having a few drinks and yelling obsenities at your buddies while they ride their guts out on in a simulated roller sprint… what could possibly be better?!?
Not much.
Don’t believe me? Check out the video from last year’s Season Kick Off Roller Racing at the bottom of the story.
Some FAQ’s
I have never ridden a bike before (or raced on the track). Can I participate in the Roller Racing?
Absolutely! Luckily, the bike is fixed to the rollers and is quite safe. On top of that, your feet are clipped into the pedals. It’s totally user friendly and we’ll have people on hand to show you the “ropes”.
Do I need to bring my own bike? Do I need a helmet?
Luckily, we provide the bikes, you just need to bring shoes that can be strapped down (sneakers/athletic shoes are great for this). High heels? Not so much… A helmet is only necessary if you plan on riding there
Should I wear cycling clothing?
The simple answer is you don’t need to, but it tends to be more comfortable. Many people will wear a layer over their comfortable cycling clothes.
How long are the races?
The races are simulations of 200m or 500m (depending). That means an all-out sprint for 30 seconds or less. It can be quite tiring, but it’s no endurance event!
We hope to see you out for the series!
