Jerry Shafer launched Share With Jerr in 2012 with a goal to raise money for cancer research while simultaneously attempting to break 3 track age group records. Jerry Shafer was a competitive local cyclist with a passion for raising money to help fight Retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer in children. Jerry’s goal in 2012 was to raise $10,000 for Retinoblastoma International, which is committed to supporting research, education, developing effective treatments, early diagnosis and awareness. He surpassed his goal when supporters gathered at the Marymoor Park Velodrome to raise over $17,000 for Retinoblastoma International, indulge in BBQ and beer, listen to great bands and meet Jerry’s young grandchild, Lance, in whose honor Jerry dedicated his record attempt and fundraising efforts.
Jerry was once again planning to raise money for Retinoblastoma International while attempting a 24-hour UMCA track cycling age group record over August 30th-31st 2013.
Jerry Shafer lost his life unexpectedly on Saturday morning June 22nd 2013 while riding his bike near Woodinville, WA. There was a celebration of his life and legacy on Wednesday June 25th at the Marymoor Park Velodrome where he spent the bulk of his time training, racing and unwinding with friends.
The planned 24 hour Share With Jerr Fundraising Festival beginning Friday, August 30-31 2013 will continue, though not with his slated 24 hour UMCA record attempt. Rather, many of his friends in the cycling community have stepped forward and offered to turn their pedals in Jerry’s honor in the form of a 24 hour Memorial Relay and Campout.
Share With Jerr has now become Share To Honor Jerr. In an effort to continue his legacy friends have vowed to pick up where he left off, ride in his honor and take up the cause of helping to fight cancer by again raising money for Retinoblastoma International.
