Jerry Baker – Remembering and Building on a Legacy

There isn’t much else we can add about Jerry Baker and the lasting impact he has had on the entire Cycling community here in the Pacific Northwest that hasn’t already been said. All that knew him are quick to remember his quiet determination, his relaxed manerism, his great smile, and his incredible passion for all things cycling. Jerry was also known as an advocate for all to ride, especially young people.

More about Jerry Baker and his lasting legacy.

“Bicycle enthusiast Jerry Baker covered so much territory in his lifetime that wherever he rode, “at least five people would say ‘hi,’ ” he recalled last winter.”

Above all else, Jerry Baker was the driving force behind the track, designing every aspect, spearheading the effort, gaining the financial support of the county, and eventually overseeing the completion of the project in 1975. His involvement in the PNW cycling community was literally cemented with this enormous task and the continuing impact it has on athletes in our region.

We want to remind our community about a fund Jerry Baker started in 2012, around the time we held our last MVA auction before our most recent one this year. Hoping to help create a culture of support for young riders, Jerry partnered with the MVA and founded the Jerry Baker Youth Development Fund. The fund is operated by the MVA and is specifically designated for financially supporting young riders in attending a variety of developmental programs necessary for competitive growth in the sport.

Of all the things Jerry could have chosen to support, it comes as no surprise that young people were the first area he wanted to enhance through his charity. Seen many years organizing the little ones for their bi-monthly ride around the track on Friday nights, the “Kiddie Kilo”, Jerry firmly believed that the Velodrome and the MVA should be committed to providing young people with significant opportunities to race and compete. His vocal support for young riders and his mentorship around the track has long been a cornerstone of the track community at Marymoor.

We want to continue to honor his commitment. The MVA continues to use the funds established by Jerry to offset the cost of supporting Marymoor’s young athletes, including the costs of regional/national competition, devlepment classes/clinics, and other travel expenses. These important programs provide the cycling community with exciting new racers and a bright future.
