This month, the Marymoor Velodrome Association is extremely proud to recognize John Klupar as our volunteer of the month! The beginning of the race season is always a busy and hectic time of year, and one very big job is setting up the race registration and results system. You might recall race officials and/or volunteers jumping across the track carrying with them print-outs of results, heats, and start lists (or you might have thought they were just trying to be extra entertainment!) to be handed up to the announcer. You know, the old string and paper-clip method! John Klupar has graciously stepped up to help develop an entirely technology-driven and paperless solution to results, and we are already reaping the benefits of his efforts. The below concept image inspired John as he worked to design the complex infastructure required for the task.
This image was actually neither a concept image or inspiration for this project. In fact, it has little to no bearing on this entire article.
John helped establish a system that utilizes the cloud to help us instantly stream results up to the announcers stand and between all the officials. With some practice, this system will help revolutionize the way we communicate on the track. Though it is a work-in-progress, this clever use of technological wizardy will eventually allow anyone to instnatly access live results on a mobile device/laptop while at the track. We’ve already experienced faster registration times and our race night organizers have been thankful for the new system. Since “the Cloud” is an oft-referred to entity, I’ll let the following graphics explain.
In all seriousness, the MVA sends a big thanks to John Klupar and all the volunteers for helping us start the season off. The track simply can’t exist without the help of our amazing community of volunteers.
We also want to acknowledge our runner-up for volunteer of the month, Steve Lindell. Steve has been a consistently dedicated volunteer for helping out our Thursday night racing. Steve comes every week to help with bike rentals, to run the lap cards, and to be an all-around awesome dude. Thanks Steve!!
Our affiliate, Microsoft, is very integral to this month’s story. Their SkyDrive technology is driving our new registration system. And they also happen to throw in matching funds to help sweeten the deal each time we fundraise. It just so happens that Steve Lindell works for Microsoft. Interesting…
