FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Olympian Jennie Reed to support the Marymoor Velodrome Association’s junior program.

REDMOND, Wash, May. 9, 2013- Olympic Silver medalist Jennie Reed will be playing an instrumental role in the development of the Marymoor Velodrome’s Junior Program. Jennie Reed’s experience and passion offers a unique opportunity for developing racers to learn from a World Champion and Olympic medalist.

New for 2013 is the addition of the Jennie Reed Foundation Junior Track Camp taking place over the weekend of June 29th and 30th. This $100 10-hour camp will allow experienced junior racers a chance to spend an entire weekend on the velodrome learning tactics, agility, nutrition, skills, and much more. This camp will prepare junior racers to move up from the junior ranks and will develop the skills and techniques needed to advance as a velodrome racer. Coached by Jennie, these juniors age 13-18 (under 13 need two years of track experience) will receive world-class tips and training advice that will greatly benefit their cycling.

In addition to the Junior Track Camp, the Marymoor Velodrome Association is proud to announce the name changing of the junior track classes from “VeloKids” to “Jennie Reed Juniors”. The formats of these three-week classes stay the same, but new for 2013 is the presence of Jennie at one class a session! For six 1.5-hour classes, juniors aged 9-16 will learn to ride the track, learn basic skills, and near the end of the class learn how to race! In addition to the skilled class instructors, Jennie will provide excellent tips, and maybe even show off her Olympic Silver medal!

Welcome new racers!

Congratulations on deciding to take a track class, enjoying the track class, and deciding that you wanted to race. We understand people like you, and we want to do everything that we can to ensure that you have a successful, stress free, and exciting introduction into track racing.

First of all, welcome. We recommend getting to the velodrome with plenty of time to spare. Our suggestion is to plan on a 5:40 arrival for the 7:00 race start on a Thursday night. This will give you ample time to rent a bike, complete the registration process, get your number pinned, and take a few laps on the track to get the body loose before racing starts at 7:00. It’s better for everyone if you show up early!

If you have a track bike, that’s great. Just remember that you must remove any brakes that may be on, it must have drop handlebars, horizontal rear dropouts and it must be in the correct gear (86inch, 22’3″ rollout, 48×15). If you are renting a bike, remember the size that you rode at your class and meet us at the garage and we’ll get you set up. Rental bikes are first come, first serve. We’ll start renting bikes around 5:40. If you ride a 52cm, 54cm or 56cm, come early! Those are our three most popular sizes.

Once you have your bike, you need to get yourself registered for racing. If you do not have a USA Cycling racing license, you will need one of those to compete. You can get a one-day license for fifteen dollars a race night, or you can purchase a yearlong license on http://www.usacycling.org for $60.00.

There will be a table set up outside of the registration window. Here you’ll need to fill out two different forms. One is the waiver, and another, the colored form, is our way of knowing who you are. You need to fill out the waiver form EVERY time you come to race. We’ll save the colored form: next time you race it will be in a folder sorted by last name.

Now you bring your two waivers to the registration booth and you are almost done! Now is the time to get settled on all the fees. For taking the class, you get two free race nights. What that means is that your race entry is covered. You’ll still need to pay for the rental bike (if you need one!), licensing fee, and once you upgrade the MVA membership fee ($75).

Make sure and bring cash or a check, and one dollar for parking!

Fees:

Rental bike: $10 (women/juniors u18: free)

Racing: Free for two nights, then $20

-A year long MVA membership is not required for Thursday night racing, but will be required upon upgrading.  Cost is $75.

USAC License:  One day- $15, Yearlong- Available at http://www.usacycling.org

Once you’re registered, you’ll get a number and you are almost ready to race. Please remember that you will use the same number until you upgrade to Wednesday nights, so please remember to bring it back when you come race again!

We’re glad you decided to come out and give racing a try! We know that you’ll have a blast. See you out there!

PreSeason Wednesday Clinics

posted in: Video Post 0

We have tremendous news for you! Let’s agree on something. Unless you are World
Champion and win every race you ever enter, there is always something that you can
improve on. Since we have few World Champions in the MVA community (we do have
several!), for the 2013 season we are offering up a way for you to improve on your track
racing skills.

They say that racing is the best practice. Do they actually say that? I just did, and I give
it my full endorsement. However, if you want to practice for racing, there are usually few
options. Training is one thing, but learning the skills and strategies used within actual
races is another animal all together.

In the month of May, the MVA is offering PreSeason clinics for racers of all skill levels.
These clinics will provide you with the opportunity to learn tactics, ask questions, and
learn new skills that you will be able to use throughout the racing season.

Starting on the second Wednesday in May, these clinics will cover various topics each
week. From 6-9 PM, you will practice: Week one- Sprints; Week two- Keirin; Week
three- Madison; Week four- Mass start races.

For only $15.00 (that’s only five dollars an hour, people!) you get to spend three hours
doing simulations where you are beating your rivals. I will not make promises, but if you
show up to these clinics you will be beating your rivals come race season. I promise.

Pre-Season Reminders

It is finally here! After a long and dreary winter spent dreaming about laps on the velodrome, preseason racing is making its return. Eight long months have passed. That’s 32 weeks or around 224 days scheming about track racing. Planning the first attack of the season. Visualizing that ringing bell. It starts now: four months of Fridays at the velodrome, relaxing underneath the lights and racing. Four months of speed, friends, beer garden trips, biscuit eating, tired legs (the good kind), prime sprints, lap boards, that long walk to the porta-potty, Bilko’s voice, good races, bad races, and great times.

Just in case you need a reminder, here’s what we think that you should bring to the first Friday night of the season:

Bike/clothes/shoes/helmet/glasses
Tools/chainrings/cogs
Race license (we only need to see this once!)
Cash/check for racing. Our fees are attached below.
A dollar for parking
Full water bottles: We’ll have a cooler on the warm days, but come prepared!
An all around awesome attitude
A chair to sit on in the infield?
And sorry folks, but this is Washington. So make sure to bring a jacket for when the sun goes down because the first couple nights of racing will get a little chilly by the end of the session!

It’s been a long winter, but we at the MVA are excited about the season to come. There is much in store and Friday night preseason is only the beginning. So come on out for Friday Night lights, have some fun racing, and remember that the bell in a Win-n-out or an Unknown Distance when you are off the front is the sweetest noise that you will ever hear.

See you out there.
